WHY MULHOLLAND

Why Should I Get A Locked Outside Mailbox?

By Dan Locke

You need a mailbox that locks to have the security you need to prevent identity theft and keep your mail secure.  Locking your mailbox is the first step in preventing identity theft and making sure that your credit cards, checks and other valuables arrive to you safely.

Your unlocked, wood-posted mailbox is an open invitation to criminals.  It says, “Here I am, come and get me!”

Identity Theft

Identity theft is a rising crime. Millions are affected by it each year. Criminals accomplish this by getting key pieces of your identifying information; your name, address, date of birth, social security number and mother's maiden name, and then use this to impersonate you.

The thief steals your personal information to finance a carefree spending spree that leaves you holding the bag. It’s very difficult to clear your credit once this has occurred, and all the time it is being cleared, your own credit rating is shot.

Once your credit history has been damaged, it is a lot harder to get a new job or even rent an apartment, as employers and landlords often review credit records for new applicants.

Outdoor Unlocked Mailboxes

If you have a nice home, well off the street, or if you live in a rural area, it’s a likelihood that you have your mail delivered to a mailbox that is located at the edge of your property, next to a public street or road.

These mailboxes are often very decorative or rustic in appearance and can give your property a nice appearance.

But most of these mailboxes are not locked!  For a thief, all that it takes is driving up to your mailbox, looking around to make sure that he is not being watched, and then reaching through his window to grab your mail… and then he’s gone…he’s accomplished the first step in stealing your identity … and your piece of mind.

You Won’t Know It Happened Until It Is Too Late

Sad but true… you often won’t know it till it is too late. You get the bills or the credit card statements, or you get a tax bill that doesn’t make any sense at all… and the room around you starts to spin…

Lock Your Mailbox!

You need to lock your mailbox. You need to make sure that your mailbox is not an easy target for an identity thief.
